Is It Over Already?

Posted on September 06 2016

Time is freeI can’t believe it! Where did summer go? The last time I looked, the pools were just opening. Despite the travel, the work, the sun and the fun,  summer really sped by.

We often say, “time flies when you are having fun”. While that perspective may be true there are also times we wish the time to pass, perhaps at work, or while doing a chore or even in the presence of a person you rather not spend time with.  In today’s society, we seem to be in a rush all the time.

I remember a long time ago, a former colleague said in her speech… never wish for time to go by quickly. Those simple words 25 years ago had such an impact as she said them with such urgency.  Her message to me was to cherish every moment you have, realize that time  is precious and we don’t have a limitless amount.  I never forgot her words.  I suppose it hit me even harder due to my profession as a Nurse.

If you really thought about this, how would you live your life if you embraced time more? Would you notice more details during the day; perhaps enjoy the simple things more?  Would you do more things in life that bring your joy ans worry less? Would you savor food more and have longer embraces with friends and loved ones? Would you take longer pauses to listen to children when they talk?

Think about how your life would be different if you allowed yourself to really notice and enjoy each moment you were gifted.

I wish you moments that truly stop the clock, more  conversations that matter, and presence with every breath.

Please share your thoughts.

A Fourth of July Experience

Posted on July 04 2016

Fourth of julyAmerica’s most precious holidays. We have so much freedom. Freedom to speak our minds, pray in whatever way we wish or not. We enjoy the freedom to dress they way we want and adorn our bodies in the way we desire – from jewelry to ink. We can eat whatever we want and listen to our choice of music.  All of this is taken for granted somehow. The 4th of July is often regarded as just a day for picnics, fireworks, and partying.

This weekend I had the privilege of staying with our dear friends in Southport, NC.  I have never experienced a more patriotic weekend anywhere. From honoring Veteran’s for fighting for our freedom; to witnessing the Naturalization of 106 new citizens from 36 different countries; to  a full all-out parade down main street; it was clear that the fourth of July stood for something more than a beer party. Families of all ages stood together as they played our National Anthem. Seeing the little children honoring the day in their red-white and blue outfits and waving small flags. it was quite a sight.

I feel so richly blessed to be an American and love what it stands for … freedom to pursuit happiness.  I hope all of you had the privileged to take the time to remember what this day really stands for and for a moment of gratitude for all we have in the USA.

I wish all of you a wonderful day of celebrating our freedom.

Be well,

Is Your Exercise Fun?

Posted on January 31 2016

zumba funny

Okay, how many of you went back to the gym this year…again?  I had been shopping around last fall for a place to go as winter was approaching – stealing a bit of my walking time. I found a local one that didn’t have any long term contracts and allowed you to pay a monthly fee as you go.  It was perfect.

One day while I was on the treadmill I noticed they were having Zumba class.  I know a lot of friends who love Zumba.  Since I love to dance, I figured I might be able to do something like this.

I was soon to learn, that to do Zumba, you don’t have to be a great dancer. Instead, you have to be able to laugh at yourself.  Not only was it one of the most intense classes I had ever taken, but there was a lot of skill in keeping up with a different kind of music. I loved watching the instructor and the women who had been at it for a while. Needless to say, I stayed in the back of the class so I could follow the people in front of me, while trying not to draw attention to the fact that I was truly a newbie at this!

I lasted about 35 minutes and I think I laughed for about 20 minutes of that.  Every time the moves shifted, my feet could not keep up with what my brain was telling them to do fast enough to keep up. It was hilarious and with certainly, I knew I was that spastic person in the class with no idea of what I was doing let alone keep the rhythm while keeping in step.  Oh… and the mirrors in the room didn’t help that either.  As I watched myself, I’d laugh, and the more I laugh the more ridiculous I looked. The more I laughed the more fun I had. I felt no embarrassment, no self-deprecation, no inadequacy… because I didn’t take myself seriously.  It was a new experience and I got a great work out. It led to new friends and another great way to really tone up!

Putting fun into exercise is so much better than pushing without joy.  You’ll last longer at the gym too! Find an exercise that is both entertaining and enjoyable so it is a time you look forward to.
